There have been many indications of an Afterlife on GH throughout the years. Characters have appeared as ghosts who escort other characters to heaven or drag them to hell.
In 1989, after Edward Quartermaine was presumed dead, his ghost continued to speak to his wifeLila from the beyond. (This included floating cigars and moving furniture.) This was retconned in 1991, when Edward was revealed alive and living the Bahamas.
In 1995, after a fight between twinsRyan Chamberlain and Kevin Collins in a fun-house, their mother, Melanie Chamberlain, appeared next to Ryan just as a fire started and they both look at Kevin through the flames as she dragged Ryan to hell. Ryan was presumed dead in an explosion. This was later retconned in 2018 when Ryan was revealed to be alive.
In January 2001, Sonny Corinthos had a near-death experience during which the ghost of his wife, Lily Corinthos, visited him.
In February 2003, Sonny, while on the docks, disregards Jason Morgan's advice to remain concealed. Gunmen suddenly strike, and Sonny is hit. As Jason seeks help, Sonny meets Luke Spencer at the Pearly Gates, filling in for St. Peter. Luke informs Sonny he has an opportunity to go back to life to rectify his wrongs. Sonny's initial challenge involves Alexis Davis, who confesses Kristina is his child but pleads with Sonny to stay away for her protection. Sonny's insistence on custody leads to a failed test. Then, Sonny finds out Jason has become the Mob leader and proposes Sonny become his enforcer. Sonny's rejection of Jason's merciless strategy signifies another failure. Finally, Skye Chandler-Quartermaine lures Sonny into a plot against Jasper Jacks and the Quartermaines, but Sonny, wary of her intentions, fails once more by dismissing her. In the following test, Jason discloses that Mike Corbin, after divorcing Sonny's mother Adela, married Florence Campbell, making Gia Campbell Mike's daughter and Sonny's sister, and Marcus Taggert, Sonny's step-brother. Determined to face Taggert, Sonny is advised by Luke to deal with Taggert as kin, just as Luke accepted a Cassadine as his own. On the docks, Sonny confronts Taggert but refrains from violence, choosing a new tactic. Taggert's knowledge of their shared father provokes Sonny to threaten him, but Luke steps in, reminding Sonny that his true challenge was to forgive Taggert, a test Sonny fails once again. At the next trial, the Quartermaines gather at their estate amidst a media frenzy following AJ Quartermaine's victory in Michael's custody battle. Edward unveils the family drama as a hit reality TV show. Carly enters with Michael, surrounded by bodyguards. Seeing Sonny, Michael runs to him. AJ challenges Sonny, pressing him to reveal to Michael that he is his biological father and has always loved him. He also demands that Sonny confess to taking Michael from his real father, AJ. Conversely, Sonny assures Michael that he never took him from anyone and that staying with AJ isn't obligatory. Luke reappears, condemning Sonny's failure in the test, labeling him a hypocrite for wanting to raise Kristina while denying AJ time with Michael, highlighting Sonny's hypocrisy, pride, vanity, and wrath. Luke escorts Sonny back to his penthouse, where Carly and his son await. However, when Carly passes the baby to Sonny, he hastily sets the child down and flees. Departing, Sonny finds himself back at Luke's desk, where Luke proclaims Sonny's ascension to heaven with his wife and child. Puzzled, Sonny inquires if Carly and the baby are deceased, but Luke clarifies that heaven is a mindset, promising Sonny joy with his family. Sonny confesses his doubts about being meant for happiness, but Luke presents a choice: return to earth or remain in heaven, cautioning that there are no certainties with either decision.
In 2004, Lila Quartermaine passed away peacefully at the Quartermaine Mansion. Her widower Edward eventually comes to believe the mansion is being haunted by Lila's restless spirit. Heather Webber attempts to con Edward into believing Lila's spirit is communicating from beyond using her as a conduit. However...one night when Heather as "Lila" frantically warns Edward that Emily Quartermaine was in danger, Alice Gunderson confronted her on the ruse, at which time Heather claimed she wasn't "acting" and the warning was very real.
In 2008, when Monica Quartermaine receives a special pair of glasses from Santa delivered by Maxie Jones and Damian Spinelli. The glasses allow the ghost to her widower Alan, to appear to her for the first time on Christmas Eve.
In September 2010, Stone Cates appeared as a ghost to his ex-girlfriend Robin Scorpio-Drake while she was kidnapped and held captive by Dr. Lisa Niles in an underground hole, encouraging her to maintain a positive attitude about being rescued.
In April 2013, Tracy and Monica Quartermaine are visited by the ghosts of Alan, Emily, and Rick Webber.
In 2014, Emily Quartermaine makes a ghostly appearance to true loveNikolas Cassadine. Emily would later appear to her mother Monica when A.J. died and joins the ghosts of their family - Edward, Lila, and Alan to escort A.J. into heaven.
In 2017, Stone Cates reappeared as a ghost to his old friend Sonny Corinthos when Sonny was assaulted by an ill Sam McCall and abandoned in a warehouse.
In May 2019, Oscar Nero-Quartermaine passed away in his sleep and was led to heaven by the spirits of his great-grandparents, Edward and Lila Quartermaine. His friends Josslyn Jacks, Trina Robinson, and Cameron Webber later attempted to reach out to his spirit. They suspected Oscar's ghost was present when they observed a glass of water moving and the candle flares flickering. The attempt to connect with the paranormal was halted by Josslyn's mother, Carly Spencer, who then offered guidance to assist Josslyn in dealing with her sorrow.
In 2023, Willow Tait hemorrhages during a c-section and flatlines. She sees her villainous adoptive motherHarmony Miller in the afterlife, dressed in black, beckoning Willow to follow her to peace. Willow hears her fianceMichael Corinthos call her name as she is walking hand in hand with Harmony.
In 2023, Curtis Ashford flatlines during surgery to repair damage from a bullet wound. He sees his late mother, Irene, who tells him that his older brother, Tommy was also there. After spending time with his mother, he hears T.J. calling out to him and makes the choice to live for his family.
In 2023, Cyrus Renault has a heart attack while in Pentonville Penitentiary. He finds himself in a hellish jail cell, where a spiritual manifestation of his sisterLaura Collins appears. They have a heart-to-heart, during which he comes to a realization about his self and actions. They embrace, and he regains consciousness.
January 10-11, 2024, B.J. Jones makes a ghostly appearance as AP reporter "Angela Brighton" who covered the recently deceased Bobbie Spencer's anti-sex trafficking efforts in Amsterdam. She shows up at her funeral, and the next day sits down at Kelly's with Bobbie's friends and family to hear stories about her mother. After, Maxie Jones and Felicia Scorpio both realize she's actually B.J. when they can't find any proof of her existence. B.J. makes a final appearance to her little brotherLucas Jones, when he exits Kelly's, on his way to catch a flight home. They say farewell, then she calls him "champ" as he turns away. Having been called that by her when she was alive, Lucas freezes, turns back around...but she's gone.
