Dr. Alexandra "Alex" Devane[6] was a fictional character and main antagonist on the ABC daytime soap opera General Hospital. She was the identical twin of Special Agent Anna Devane.
The role of Alex Marick (now Devane) was originated by British actress Finola Hughes on the now-canceled ABC daytime soap opera All My Children on July 23, 1999.
In 2017, Hughes reprised the role of Alex on General Hospital while portraying her GH character, Anna Devane from April 5 to June 8, 2017 - the duplicity wasn't revealed until May 12, 2017. In 2019, Hughes briefly pulled double duty again as Anna and Alex from March 18 to March 21, 2019.
In 2020, while portraying Anna, Hughes stepped back into the role of Alex from October 30 to November 9, 2020. Hughes later appeared as Alex in a video on February 24 and March 3, 2021.
Casting
Finola Hughes was cast as Alex Devane (then known as Alex Marick) on All My Children in 1999. At first it was unknown what character she would portray.[7] Alexandra debuted on July 23, 1999.[8]
Hughes left in the fall of 2000 for maternity leave and returned in February 2001.[9] Alex left on July 9, 2001 to Budapest, Hungary.[10]
In 2017, while portraying her General Hospital character, Anna Devane (Alex's identical twin sister), Hughes reprised her role of Alex Marick on GH from April 5 to June 8, 2017. Her reprisal of Alex wasn't revealed until May 12, 2017.
On March 15, 2019, Soaps.com confirmed that Hughes would once again pull double duty and would reprise her role of Alex during the week of March 18.[11] Hughes reprised the role of Alex while portraying Anna from March 18 to March 21, 2019.
Hughes once again reprised the role of Alex while portraying Anna from October 30 to November 9, 2020.[12]
Background
Dr. Alex Devane is the identical twin sister of W.S.B. Special Agent Anna Devane.
She has been married to Dimitri Marick since 1999, and their marriage took place in London. In 2013, it was revealed that Alex and Dimitri got a divorce on an unknown date.
She had a long-time obsession with former WSB Agent Valentin Cassadine, who worked with her in the WSB with for several years as his partner until she betrayed him for the chimera project.
In 2019, it was revealed that Alex volunteered herself and Anna to be part of Dr. Arthur Cabot's study for identical twins. As a result, some of Alex's memories were transferred to Anna. While Anna didn't know which of her memories belonged to Alex, Robert Scorpio suggested to her that Peter August isn't her son after all - he's actually Alex's son with Cesar Faison. In 2020, it was confirmed that Alex is Peter's mother because Peter had a genetic marker for rheumatoid arthritis and neither Anna nor Faison had the marker.
On March 3, 2021, Peter was devastated when he finally learned that Alex was his biological mother all along, not Anna. The news came out at his double wedding with Maxie Jones, Hamilton Finn and Anna.
Storylines
In 1999, Alexandra and new husband, Dimitri Marick, were headed back to town from London to break the news of their marriage. Before they could tell the good news, Dimitri fell ill and subsequently died. She elected to remain hidden at the airport while Dimitri and his loved ones traveled to Seaview Hospital to see if there was anything that the doctors could do to resurrect Dimitri.
Alex finally made her presence known when Edmund Grey asked that an autopsy be done on his brother to determine the cause of his death. Alex stepped forward and announced that an autopsy would not be performed. Edmund said that he was Dimitri's brother and would decide what was to be done. It was then that Alex dropped the bombshell that she was the new Mrs. Marick. Erica Kane did not take well to the news that Dimitri had found another lover.
Many doubted Alex's sincerity and feelings for Dimitri, but Peggy and Brooke English both could see the affection in her eyes. When alone, Alex would reflect on happier times with Dimitri. They had made plans to start a family together and re-settle in Pine Valley. There was also talk of Alexandra agreeing to do something quite odd for Dimitri, but what this was not revealed. Alex continued to act strangely to her husband's death, refusing to share the medical report findings and then ordering a closed casket funeral.
Edmund managed to get the casket open, and found nothing inside. Alex admitted that Dimitri was still alive, dying from a debilitating illness. He'd begged her to not let his friends and family see him so weak and to stage his death instead. Edmund refused to accept his brother writing off survival so quickly and persuaded Alex and Dimitri to try stem cell therapy to save his life. Amazingly, the treatments began to work, but one day Dimitri wandered near the ocean.
His dressing down was found at the shore, and his loved ones could only assume he was dead. Alex and Edmund got off to a rocky start, but slowly they fell in love and planned to be married. Alex was having strange flashes of memory and began to wonder if she was going insane, or if she was Anna Devane, a look-alike who had been presumed dead almost 10 years earlier in a boat explosion. In actuality, Alex's "loving" mother Charlotte had once placed her in a brainwashing facility (disguised as a mental hospital) and forced her into becoming a secret agent in a terrorist organization. Alex was supposed to kill Anna.
In 2000, when she couldn't go through with it, Charlotte had her crew kill Anna and implanted false memories in Alex's mind to make her believe she was Anna. Charlotte was planning on killing her but Edmund stopped her in the nick of time.
While being taken away by the police, Charlotte had a final revelation: She was not Alex or Anna's biological mother; they were the product of a cousin of the man Alex thought was her father. Charlotte had convinced the mother that one of her twins had been stillborn, and then smuggled the child (Alex) out of the hospital, raising her as her own. Alex was devastated to learn her entire life had been a lie and that she had a sister she had never known.
With Charlotte out of the way, Alex expected to settle down with Edmund, but within a few days Dimitri revealed himself to her. He had been kidnapped by Charlotte's thugs and had fought with all his strength to keep Alex safe and bring her "mother" to justice. Alex was overjoyed to see him again and they made love immediately. Although Alex still felt strong emotions for Edmund, she felt a stronger bond with Dimitri and could not leave her husband's side again. Edmund grew increasingly irrational and both Dimitri and Alex were frightened by his behavior.
In late 2000, she vanished while on board the Fidelity yacht. Dimitri was convinced Edmund was behind the kidnapping, but after a few months, he received a phone call. Alex was safe, but hidden away in secluded Canadian woods. She asked Dimitri not to track her down, but he and Edmund ignored her wishes. They burst into a cabin where they found an old man taking care of her. They were blindsided when Alex walked into the room and said the seriously ill woman was her twin sister, Anna.
The old man, Bart, had been taking care of Anna for years, but her seizures and fever had grown worse and worse. He tracked Alex down that night on the Fidelity and asked her to help treat her sister. Alex had agreed to join him, and since Anna couldn't be taken to a hospital since Charlotte was still out to kill her, had left Dimitri behind. Unfortunately, Anna was beyond the point of anything but extensive hospital care saving her. Alex flew Anna and Bart to Pine Valley (Bart died a few weeks later) and placed her in a private PVH wing. They pretended Alex was seriously ill from fever and needed care, but one by one other doctors began to find out the truth.
With their help, Anna was treated and released. She hid out at Wildwind as she tried to get back her strength and her lost memories. This placed the entire family in danger, but Edmund and Dimitri insisted Anna stay put. A mute young man showed up soon after Anna arrived at Wildwind. He had been instructed to kill her but couldn't go through with his job. He was another victim of Charlotte's brainwashing and as Alex quickly found out, she and Anna's half-brother. Despite Dimitri's refusal to believe his story, Alex accepted the boy (Gabriel) and tried to make him feel welcome. After a lifetime of loneliness, she was delighted to have two new siblings.
In 2001, in the midst of this turmoil, Dimitri and Edmund's niece, Gillian Andrassy, whom Alex was very close to, had agreed to make a documentary about her life. The documentarian, a woman named Ilene, was eager to see the plans of Wildwind. Her eagerness was due to her actually being Charlotte's hitwoman! Alex and everyone else found this out moments too late, as Ilene saw a woman from the back, mistook her for Anna, and shot her at close range. The woman was not Anna, but Gillian.
Gillian died from her wounds, and even though Ilene was arrested, gave Charlotte up, and was deported to face serious charges, Alex was overwhelmed with remorse. Erica Kane went out of her way to declare Alex a "curse on the entire family." Alex knew some other family members agreed and were just too polite to say so. Anna, however, vigorously defended her sister, putting Erica in her place over it on several occasions. Guilt-ridden about the constant danger and death she'd carried with her since her arrival at Wildwind, and perhaps still unsure of her feelings for Edmund, Alex left with Dimitri in 2001 to track down a family mystery and eventually settle down in Hungary.

On May 12, 2017, it was revealed that Alex has been impersonating her sister in Port Charles since the beginning of April while the real Anna Devane is being held hostage in London. In the interrogation after her arrest, Alex reveals she has impersonated Anna before when the DVX sent her to steal the Chimera Project from Valentin Cassadine, she seduced him and had sex with him. Over their one night stand, she began to grow feelings for him, so she made sure he would escape before getting killed by the WSB. She was taken into custody by the WSB.

In June, Alex escaped custody from the WSB. On June 8, she visited Valentin in the PCPD, to help him in his misfortune. She works out a deal for the two of them to be free from their crimes and seductively suggests that he finds her, once all is done. After all it was she whom he once loved deeply not Anna.
On March 18, 2019, Alex returned to Port Charles and she had also been hit with the HN-242 virus which made her suddenly go blind. Dr. Hamilton Finn rushed into the hospital room at GH, mistook Alex for Anna, and thought that the virus had reoccured until Anna showed up and introduced him to Alex. Anna then made a deal with Alex; if Alex told Anna which memories in her head are false, then Alex would get the treatment for the HN-242 virus. Alex had stalled, got under Anna's skin, and even made Anna promise that she'll give her the treatment and let her walk away a free woman. Anna agreed to her terms and begged Alex to tell her which memory was not her's. Alex eventually told her that the memory of her betraying Boris Mikhailov by leading him into an ambush was not her memory, it was Alex's. Finn restored Alex's sight and Anna had WSB agents take Alex to Steinmauer anyway. Alex, expecting Anna to betray her, got under her skin by saying, "Tell Robert I'm sorry I missed seeing him one last time."
On April 8, Robert revealed to Anna that Alex lied about the false memory. Anna was afraid that Alex was Robin Scorpio-Drake's biological mother, but she eventually found proof that she, not Alex, is her mother. However, Robert shared the possibility that Peter August might not be her son after all, but he might actually be Alex's.
On July 2, Finn learned from Anna that Alex had escaped from custody and Anna was going to be the one to bring her in. After being gone for months, Anna never found Alex and came home.
On September 2, 2020, Alex called Anna and offered her congratulations for becoming a grandmother again. Anna was skeptical about what Alex really wanted, and Alex claimed that she was tired of running and wanted to come home. Alex revealed that she is staying in Berlin, Germany and asked Anna to meet her there while promising to text her the details of where she is.
On October 7, it was revealed by Valentin that Alex was plotting to kill Anna and that she wants her dead. Valentin and Anna were planning to lure Alex back to Port Charles.
On Halloween (shown on October 30), it was confirmed that Alex is Peter August's biological mother when Anna saw that Cesar Faison did not have the genetic marker for rheumatoid arthritis. That same evening, Alex returned to Port Charles, dressed up in the black witch costume, and surprised Anna in her own house before knocking her out. After Alex dragged Anna down into the basement and began holding her hostage in there, Alex began impersonating her sister and gave candy to trick-or-treaters.
The next day, Alex went down into the basement to check on Anna, who managed to get her gag off even though she was taped to a chair. Alex revealed that she came back to take her rightful place as Peter's mother and doting grandmother to his baby. Alex thought Anna was pretty resourceful when Anna was able to figure out the truth by learning that neither she nor Faison had the genetic marker for rheumatoid arthritis, meaning the marker came from Alex. Anna suggested that Alex should get checked out since she has the marker, and Alex planned to keep that in mind.
Alex told Anna that she knew Faison was obsessed with her, so she used that to seduce some secrets out of him and lo and behold, she ended up pregnant. When Alex revealed again that she wanted to take her rightful place as Peter's mother and doting grandmother to Peter's child, Anna called her a liar and asked why she really came back since she didn't believe that Alex wanted to be a mother or a grandmother. Alex revealed that she was in a lot of hot water and was being pursued from all sides, and feels like her only option is to become Anna Devane, although she believes it's going to be a bit of a challenge.
Anna called Alex a fool and said that Valentin, Robert, and most certainly Finn would know the difference, and Alex said that Peter wouldn't suspect a thing. When they heard someone ring the doorbell, Alex asked Anna if she was expecting someone, and Anna sarcastically said that the Army, Navy, and the Marines were joining her for tea this afternoon before calling for help. Alex duct-taped Anna's mouth by wrapping it around her head before going upstairs.
When Alex answered the door, she saw that it was Valentin, who came in and said he's been calling while she hasn't returned any of his texts. Alex, pretending to be Anna, apologized for worrying him and claimed that Alex has not contacted her yet. After "Anna" said that she would never let anything happen to her son, Valentin grew suspicious and realized that she was not Anna. Although "Anna" tried to cover her mistake, Valentin was onto Alex and asked for a glass of water. She obliged so that gave him the opportunity to look for Anna.
When he was looking for Anna, Alex drugged Valentin and held a knife to his neck. Alex took Anna's gun and tied Anna and Valentin together in a warehouse with a bomb, then busted a gas pipe and left them to die but they managed to escape.
Alex ran into Finn and ended up shooting him when they fought for a gun. She kidnapped a pregnant Maxie Jones and held her hostage on the Haunted Star. Alex ended up being shot twice in the stomach by Anna. Alex pulled herself off the boat and was presumed dead.
On February 24, 2021, Liesl Obrecht broke into Maxie and Peterโs place and stole an envelope from Alexโs ex-husband Dimitri Marick which held a video of Alex confessing she was Peterโs mother. This video was played by Liesl at Maxie and Peter's wedding in front of everyone, leaving everyone shocked by this truth, especially a weeping Peter.
