In May 1994, Maxie Jones became seriously ill and was given her brain dead cousin B.J. Jones' heart to survive.
Storyline[]
Maxie Jones falls ill and is rushed to General Hospital. Simone Hardy diagnoses her with pneumonia, and Monica Quartermaine's heart scan uncovers congestive heart failure. Monica informs Felicia Jones, Maxie's mother, about the need for bypass surgery and possibly a heart transplant if her condition doesn't improve. As a result, Mac Scorpio tracks down Maxie's father Frisco Jones. As Maxie's situation becomes critical, Miguel Morez heroically saves children from a van accident, including his niece B.J. Jones, who is later declared brain dead due to severe head trauma. B.J.'s heart, a match for Maxie's rare P factor, becomes available for transplant. Despite the pain, Tony Jones and Bobbie Spencer consent to the donation. During the transplant surgery, Tony stays by B.J.'s side. Maxie's operation is deemed a success, and she will be monitored for organ rejection.
Tony lays his head on Maxie's chest and listens to his daughter's heart beat within his niece. Later, Tony sits beside B.J.'s body, still on the operating table and asks her to take his own broken heart in exchange and keep it safe.
Maxie's Heart Attack[]
In May of 2005, Maxie has a heart attack at a party on The Haunted Star and has to undergo another heart transplant, but she doesn't want to have it because she wants to keep B.J.'s heart.
Maxie refuses to receive another transplant, feeling it would be disrespectful towards B.J.'s sacrifice and that a part of her lives on as long as her heart is beating in Maxie's chest. B.J.'s spirit then visits her, and assures her cousin that getting a new heart is the right action, and that she does live on, but not in her heart, but as long as Maxie and everyone continue to remember her and love her. Maxie later recovers and has her high school graduation.
B.J. Lives[]
In February of 2009, as part of the ABC Daytime "Go Red" campaign for women with heart disease, this famous storyline is brought up.
Maxie falls asleep after attending the "Go Red" fashion show in New York City and while asleep, she dreams of an alternative universe where she died and B.J. lived.
In the dream, Patrick Drake and Carly Spencer got married following Carly's leaving Tony. B.J. and Matt Hunter were on the verge of marriage, Robin Scorpio stayed single and reserved, Mac Scorpio was depicted as a drunk and a police officer instead of commissioner, and Patrick, serving as the chief of staff at General Hospital, terminated Bobbie. Once the dream concluded, Maxie was relieved to be alive.
Heavenly Visit[]
January 10-11, 2024, B.J. makes a ghostly appearance as AP reporter "Angela Brighton" who covered Bobbie's anti-sex trafficking efforts in Amsterdam. She shows up at her funeral, and the next day sits down at Kelly's Diner with Bobbie's friends and family to hear stories about her mother. After, Maxie and Felicia both realize she's actually B.J. when they can't find any proof of her existence. B.J. makes a final appearance to her little brother Lucas Jones, when he exits Kelly's, on his way to catch a flight home. They say farewell, then she calls him "champ" as he turns away. Having been called that by her when she was alive, Lucas freezes, turns back around...but she's gone.
