The Baldwins are a fictional family on the American soap opera General Hospital and its spinoff Port Charles.
Background[]
In 1963, attorney Lee Baldwin started volunteering as an addiction counselor on the seventh floor of General Hospital. Two years later, Nurse Meg Bentley came to town with her son Scotty Bentley. Lee and Meg married, and he adopted Scotty.
In 1966, Lee's younger brother, Dr. Tom Baldwin, arrived in town. Tom wed Nurse Audrey Hardy, but when he discovered her lingering love for her ex, he raped her in anger. Audrey sought a divorce and unexpectedly became pregnant, giving birth to a son named Steven, after her beloved Dr. Steve Hardy. Fearing Tom would fight for custody if he knew Steven was alive, Audrey hid her son until the divorce was finalized.
Steven, now called Tommy Jr., was later discovered by Tom, who took him and coerced Audrey into resuming their marriage. Tom abducted Tommy to Mexico, but was thought to be dead after some time, leading to a reunion between Tommy and Audrey. Years later, Tom reappeared, attempting to win back his wife and son. Realizing they did not want him, he departed, allowing the divorce to be completed. Audrey and Steve Hardy married, with Steve adopting Tommy.
Meg was diagnosed with breast cancer, leading to a radical mastectomy. Her illness resulted in a mental breakdown, necessitating her stay in a sanitarium. After Meg's passing from a stroke in 1973, Lee was left a widower, raising Scott alone. Eventually, Lee found companionship with the widowed Dr. Gail Adamson, who became a mother figure to Scotty. They married in 1980.
In 1993, a grown Scott Baldwin married Dominique Stanton, and their close friend Lucy Coe agreed to be a surrogate for the terminally ill Dominique. Lucy gave birth to Scott and Dominique's daughter, Serena Baldwin.
In 1994, Scott discovered he was the father of Karen Wexler, a child from a past high school romance. Lee and Gail were delighted to welcome Karen into the family. Although Karen and Scott initially had a strained relationship, it improved over time.
Port Charles[]
In 1999, Scott and Lucy got married, and adopted a daughter, Christina Baldwin. Following a friendly divorce, Lucy remained an integral part of Serena and Christina's lives. Christina, born on the spinoff Port Charles, made her only appearance on General Hospital during Christmas 1999 and seems to have been retconned from the show since then.
Tragically, in 2003, Karen died in a car accident, leaving the Baldwins heartbroken. Afterward, Scott moved to Paris, France, with his daughters.
General Hospital[]
Scott continued his visits to Port Charles alone and, in 2007, he found out he had a teen-aged son, Logan Hayes. Scott tried to connect with his distant son, but was devastated when Logan was fatally stabbed by his former girlfriend, Lulu Spencer.
In 2013, Heather Webber revealed that Scott Baldwin fathered her son, the serial killing artist known as Robert "Franco" Frank, after a brief encounter many years earlier. That same year, Franco was diagnosed with a brain tumor, which was the cause of his homicidal psychosis. After its removal, he became a reformed artist and took his paternal surname. In 2017, it was reported that Lee and Gail had retired to Florida, where Lee passed away. Early in 2019, Scott announced Gail's death as well.
On Valentine's Day, February 14, 2019, Franco wed his girlfriend of three years, Elizabeth Webber, and became the stepfather to her sons, Cameron Webber, Jake Webber, and Aiden Webber. Franco formed special bonds with each of the boys. In March 2021, Franco was killed in a confrontation with the villainous Peter August. Following Franco's death, his widow Elizabeth chose to retain the Baldwin surname. Scott assured Elizabeth that she would always be part of the Baldwin family, even in Franco's absence.
