The Chase family is a fictional family on the American soap opera General Hospital. They are best known for their intelligence and stoicism.
Background[]
In 2016, the first member of the family to show up in Port Charles was Dr. Hamilton Finn (formerly Chase), an infectious-disease specialist whose expertise was needed to treat Tracy Quartermaine.
In 2016, following a chance meeting with Hayden Barnes at The Floating Rib, Finn confided to her that he was dying. He explained that he had contracted a rare disease in his travels, for which there was no cure for it. Hayden realized that Finn's wife had died from the same illness.
After Finn discovered that Hayden is actually Rachel Berlin, the daughter of former banker Raymond Berlin, he paid her a visit. Raymond was responsible for cheating investors which affected the research facility where Finn had been working on a cure for Blackwood's syndrome, the virus that killed his wife, Dr. Reiko Finn. Hayden was horrified to learn what Raymond had done and Reiko's death.
Feeling some responsibility, Hayden grew close to Finn, even helping him with his drug habit. He left town briefly upon hearing there might be a cure, but came back when it fell through. Hayden promise to stick by him even to his death. This turned into a romance in 2017, Hayden became pregnant, and when Finn finally discovered a cure, they got engaged. Unfortunately, she left town after claiming she miscarried their unborn child.
Two years later, in 2018, softhearted hard-body Det. Harrison Chase joined the Port Charles Police Department. He was eager to catch up with his estranged older sibling, but Finn had an attitude anytime Chase came around — at first.
Chase wasn't to blame for this attitude. Although Finn softened towards Chase and began a brotherly relationship with him, he still held a grudge against their dad, English and journalism professor, Gregory Chase, who moved on after the death of Finn's mother Jean Finn (originally Nichols) faster than he approved.
That same year, Finn became friends with Alexis Davis (who also became his sponsor at AA meetings) and started a romance with WSB Agent Anna Devane. He moved into her townhouse, and she accepted his proposal at the 2019 Nurses Ball.
Near the end of 2018, Chase began a relationship with elementary school teacher Willow Tait, and the two became lovers in early 2019. Chase defends Willow from "Shiloh" and his Dawn of Day Cult, which haunts her past as Shiloh raped Willow when she was part of the cult and is Wiley Cooper-Jones's biological father. She moves into his apartment in 2019.
In late February, the truth is revealed that Chase's psychotic ex-girlfriend Nelle Benson and Brad Cooper switched Jonah Corinthos and Wiley Cooper-Jones. The child they knew as Wiley was actually Michael Corinthos (Chase's best friend) and Nelle's son, Jonah and Willow's son Wiley had died the day he was born.
Nelle tried to kidnap Wiley and leave town, leading to an altercation between his babysitter/suppose mother Willow, which ended when Nelle knocked Willow unconscious. Nelle almost got away with Wiley, but she was apprehended by Chase and Michael, who had just learned the truth about Wiley from Michael's uncle, Lucas Jones.
After Willow woke up at GH, Chase broke the news to her, leaving her devastated. Chase, Michael, and Michael's girlfriend Sasha Gilmore all supported her as she grieved the loss of her son. Michael invited Willow to continue to be Wiley's mother, and when Nelle sued for full custody, Sasha suggested a marriage of convenience. The two couples were both against this, until Chase and Sasha staged a fake affair to get push Michael and Willow towards each other. The scheme worked, Michael and Willow won custody, but the other two spiraled - until the truth was revealed and their friendships and previous romances were reforged - though Michael and Willow were now secretly in love.
On October 23, 2019, Hayden came back to town and was forced to come clean with Finn when their daughter, Violet Finn (then-Barnes) was brought to the hospital with a fever. Although Finn was furious with Hayden for lying about the miscarriage, he put that aside to take care of Violet. Shortly after, Hayden was scared outta town (and hasn't been seen since) — thanks to Prince Nikolas Cassadine manipulating his old flame. She left Violet in Finn's care.
In 2020, it was revealed that Gregory was married to world renowned journalist Jackie Templeton, making her Chase's mom and Finn's stepmom. On October 27, it was revealed that Finn slept with Jackie decades ago, the night before she married Gregory. It was also revealed that Finn didn't stay away because he was angry with Gregory for remarrying so soon after his mom died, he stayed away because he felt ashamed of what he did to Gregory. Shortly after, a paternity test showed Finn to be Chase's father.
In January 2021, Finn was set to marry Anna in a double ceremony with her "son" Peter August and his fiance Maxie Jones — until he learned on their wedding day that she'd confided in future lover Valentin Cassadine rather than him, that the villainous Peter wasn't her son after all, but rather her nephew. They broke up, but remained great friends.
On April 12, 2021, Chase collapsed from a high fever (after unwittingly being poisoned by Peter trying to kill Finn) and was admitted to the hospital with a mysterious illness.
On June 3, 2021, at his wits end trying to cure Chase, Finn confronts Peter on the hospital roof as he was trying to escape. Peter destroys the vial, and Finn angrily throws him down the stairs, seemingly killing him. Nurse Elizabeth Webber finds them, and knowing that Finn is Chase's best chance at survival, convinces him not to turn himself in. Instead, they use the rooftop elevator to move Peter's body down to the hospital sub-basement where they stash his presumed-dead body in a large freezer.
On June 11, 2021, while in the hospital on his deathbed, Chase proposes to Willow who accepts.
On June 18, 2021, Chase and Willow got married, with his family, Michael, and Sasha in attendance. Immediately after, they learn Gregory is Chase's father (the villainous Cyrus Renault had altered it to get revenge on Jackie for helping keep his mother from him) and their new cure will work - just as Chase flat-lined.
On June 21, the does cure work and Chase lives; albeit with no feeling in his legs. While the family made amends with each other, Jackie left town after and she and Gregory divorced.
On August 24, Michael and Willow admitted their affair to Chase, who admitted that he knew, having learned of it a few days prior. Chase also revealed at this time that he can walk a little, having pushed himself to surprise her, and left the Quartermaine Mansion, with Willow running after him. Back at his old apartment, she begged his forgiveness and thanked him for being there for her - telling him she'll always love him for his sacrifice for Wiley, and how he was her rock during her trials with Shiloh and losing her baby. He insists on no more apologies or begging forgiveness, and she gave him his ring back. They divorce and like Anna and Finn, remain great friends.
In 2021, Brook Lynn Quartermaine secretly raised Maxie Jones' newborn daughter, Bailey Jones with Valentin Cassadine - all to keep her safe from her villainous father Peter. Chase's investigation into Louise led him to the truth about Bailey and he claimed to be her father. He, Brook Lynn, and Bailey moved into the Jacks Beach House rent free, and act as a family until February 2022, when it is safe and Bailey is returned to Maxie - as Peter is dead.
After a series of false starts between 2021-22, Finn became involved with Elizabeth. There continue to be complications, as she is Hayden's half-sister. They become something of a "blended family", the Chases and Webbers, with Elizabeth's sons helping the "Finns" move into their new apartment. It is also discovered that she was responsible for the accident that led to Reiko's fatal illness. Finn doesn't blame her, and they officially become lovers on Halloween of 2023.
Throughout 2022, after dancing around their feelings for each other, Chase and Brook Lynn become romantically involved, and the professed their love on July 18, 2023. She moved in with him on August 31, 2023, and they became engaged on December 4, 2023.
From 2023-24, Gregory took a job as a journalist at The Invader where he grew close to and romanced Alexis, now its Editor-in-Chief. Alexis insisted he take the job as he had just received the terminal diagnosis of A.L.S. (aka Lou Gehrig's Disease) and resigned from his job as professor at PCU. After he reveals this to his sons, they rally behind him, and he moves in with Finn and Violet so they can help care for him.
May 16, 2024, Chase and Brook Lynn got married, and Gregory passed away that same night.
On June 5, 2024, a service is held for Gregory's funeral. Friends and family say a few words, dedicate a bench in his name, complete with a placard, and scatter his ashes on a large tree in Rice Park.
His fathers death led Finn on a downward spiral, he starts drinking and hiding it from his family. He brings a woman home that he met in a bar, which Elizabeth walks in on. They argue harshly and break up. Chase and Brook Lynn visit the next day, concerned about his drinking and Violet. They suggest she move in with them as they go to stay at the Q mansion. This leads to another fight, where Finn refuses to give up his daughter, but throws his brother out, rashly cutting ties with him.
Chase and Brook Lynn and Elizabeth all express concern for Violet being around Finn's drunken behavior and look to possible legal recourse. Finn quits the hospital after the co-chiefs of staff confront him; he then gets drunk, injures himself, and passes out - which is how Violet finds him when she comes home. She calls Tracy, who calls EMTs. Violet, Brook Lynn, and Chase go to the Q mansion, Tracy takes pictures of the scene and wakes Finn, telling him he needs to go to rehab for Violet, who is safe.
Diane Miller visits Finn the next day, informing him of an emergency guardianship order for Chase and BLQ having Violet, and serving a restraining order. Scott Baldwin then turns him down as a client in Finn's attempt to sue the hospital.
Brook Lynn and Tracy discuss living arrangements. Tracy talked with Olivia and Monica, and they agree she and Chase can't move into Finn's place because it will be too traumatizing for Violet; and Chase's place is too small. Brook Lynn says they can find a bigger place, but Tracy says Violet needs stability and consistency right now, so they are offering Violet a home here, provided she and Chase come with her.
Finn agrees to check-in for a 90-day minimum, and goes to say goodbye to Violet. They have a tearful farewell, then Chase drives his brother to Skymeadow Lodge. They make amends, Finn thanks his brother for watching out for Violet, and Chase again pledges his support for his brother and that he will be there to pick him up at the end of his stay. They share a tearful goodbye themselves, then Finn enters the rehab and Chase drives back to the Quartermaine mansion.
