Casting[]
On October 1, 2014, three time Daytime Emmy award-winning actor, Billy Miller joined the cast of GH as a recast Jason Morgan, replacing Steve Burton two years after his exit in 2012. Miller portrayed Jason until December 1, 2017, when his portrayal of Jason was retconned to make his version of the character turn out to actually be Jason's twin, Chief Andrew "Drew" Cain due to Burton's return in late 2017. Miller then portrayed Drew from December 1, 2017 until exiting the show on August 21, 2019. Miller unfortunately passed away on September 15, 2023.
The role of Drew was recast in 2021 with former All My Children alum, Cameron Mathison, who was first heard as Drew on August 16, 2021 and made his first appearance on August 17, 2021.
The role of Caroline "Carly" Spencer was originated by actress Sarah Brown on April 5, 1996. In January 2000, it was announced that she would exit the show as her contract was up in March of that year, but Brown decided to stay for one more year and made her last appearance on April 23, 2001.
Brown then returned as a new character, Claudia Zacchara from January 25, 2008 to November 4, 2009, but was seen in a flashback on May 4, 2010.
The role of Carly was recast with actress Tamara Braun, who held the role from May 2, 2001 until April 15, 2005.
Braun then returned as a new character, Dr. Kim Nero from November 22, 2017 to November 19, 2019.
Jennifer Bransford then took over the role of Carly on April 18, 2005, but was let go months later with a statement from a representative explaining that Bransford's casting "did not work out" and she made her last appearance on October 5, 2005.
A month later, Laura Wright joined the cast as Carly on November 4, 2005 and has remained in the role ever since.
On April 1, 2014, as part of GH's 51st anniversary, as Wright continued to portray Carly, Brown and Braun returned to the series as Carly, with all three actresses portraying her that day.

Storylines[]
In 2014, upon meeting the amnesiac "Jake Doe" at GH, Carly Spencer immediately felt a connection to him. He gave her simple and logical advice about her love-life - advice that reminded her of her late best-friend Jason Morgan.
In December that year, when Sam McCall suspected "Jake" as the one who held her hostage to free Cesar Faison at the PCPD, Carly defended him, not believing he was responsible. It was later revealed that "Jake" really did commit the crimes, though against his will as he was under Helena Cassadine's control through conditioning.
On New Year's Eve in 2014, "Jake" worked the bar at the Metro Court since Carly gave him a job. Carly and "Jake" kissed at the stroke of midnight, both feeling alone and left out. Their friendship continued, and Carly was supportive of "Jake" when he admitted he was having blackouts and missing time with no memory of what he might have done. She went with him when he started seeing Dr. Kevin Collins to sort out his memories. It was during these sessions that Helena's control over him is first seen. Carly helped "Jake" uncover the truth about his missing time and reconcile evidence they found of his crimes against Kevin's professional advice. Carly reassures "Jake", that he's the good man and reminded him that when they first met, she felt a connection to him and she trusted him immediately.
Secretly alive, Helena contacted "Jake" and ordered him to plant a bomb on the Haunted Star where a party would be hosted. "Jake" wondered why she would want him to do this and Helena claimed that nobody meant anything to him. When "Jake" told her he has people he cares about, including Elizabeth and Carly, Helena told him that while Elizabeth helped him recover, Carly wasn't a friend to him. At the same time, Carly learned from Kevin that "Jake" never came and saw him the first time, so in order to prevent "Jake" from potentially hurting anyone else, she went to the P.C.P.D. and gave Detective Nathan West "Jake's" bag of evidence and turned him in. "Jake" came out of his trance after planting the bomb, but was still arrested. Afterwords, Carly apologized to Sam for not believing her, but they agreed that they were both right about "Jake" - although he really did commit the crimes, it wasn't his fault so he's not a monster.
On February 27, Carly apologized to "Jake" for turning him in, afraid that he didn't want to be friends with her anymore. He didn't blame her and said that it all worked out in the end. She offers him the legal services of Diane Miller, which he turns down stating he was offered a deal by D.A. Kyle Sloane's with strings attached. On March 13, Carly invited "Jake" to move in with her and continued to help him establish his cover by "kicking him out" of the Metro Court.
The deal with Sloane led to "Jake" working undercover in the Jerome organization - a job that led to Hayden Barnes getting shot. "Jake" was eventually able to get out from under Sloane's thumb and out of the Jerome organization altogether.
In September, Sonny Corinthos got shot and landed in the hospital. On September 22, while on morphine, Sonny thanked "Jake" for saving his life and mistook him for Jason. Although Carly told Sonny that "Jake" wasn't Jason, Sonny insisted that he was, so "Jake" and Carly played along. Carly promised Sonny that Jason would take care of things.
In November 2015, Carly was seemingly able to uncover his identity after seeing a facial recognition program on a computer dissect "Jake's" new face to reveal the face of Jason Morgan. A DNA test confirmed that "Jake" was Jason. Initially in denial, "Jake" accepted that he was Jason, even without his memories. He finally regained his suppressed memories in May 2016.
In 2017, however, with the arrival of the mysterious Patient 6 (who looks exactly like "Jason" used to look before his accident in 2014) and the revelation that Jason has an identical twin named Andrew, Carly immediately began to believe that Patient 6 was Jason, leaving "Jason" feeling betrayed. On December 1, 2017, Dr. Andre Maddox confirmed who was the real Jason and who was Drew of the Moore twins. Although Drew initially felt betrayed by Jason's friends, the once close relationships became civil again.
After being presumed dead in 2019, Drew returned in 2021 from two years in captivity thanks to Victor Cassadine. He reconnected with all of his loved ones and friends, including Carly and Sonny while breaking the news to everyone about Jason's presumed death. In 2022, Drew became closer to Carly and they slowly began a relationship with each other.
On February 9, 2022, Drew and Carly talk in the boathouse after Carly walked in on her then-husband Sonny and Nina Reeves in bed at the Haunted Star. Drew and Carly almost kiss but she stops it.
On August 26, 2022 during the Quartermaine picnic, having divorced Sonny and wanting to move on with her life, Carly and Drew flirt at the boathouse, before having their first real kisses. They nearly sleep together, but are stopped by the commotion of Ava Jerome getting stabbed by The Hook at the start of the serial killings.
On September 27, 2022, Drew surprises Carly by showing up at her hotel room and offers to help her with his Aurora Media connections when she explains the situation. She offers to let him sleep on the couch in her room instead of finding another hotel and he accepts her invitation.
On October 21, 2022, Carly and Drew go to the Jacksonville Beach. Carly dumps an urn of Virginia's ashes into the ocean after telling Drew her memories of how her mom loved the beach.
