Background[]

The Alcazar crime family, led by Luís Alcazar, originated in South America. In 1998, Brenda Barrett and her mother were presumed dead after their car plunged off a cliff, but Brenda survived, rescued by Luís. Four years later, the Alcazars emerged in Port Charles in 2002, with Luís Alcazar arriving as a foe to Sonny Corinthos and the Corinthos mob family. Intent on eliminating Sonny and Jasper Jacks, Luís's obsession with Brenda led to chaos in the city, resulting in Kristina Cassadine's death and the abduction of Felicia Jones and her children.

Roy DiLucca, hired by Luís to assassinate Sonny, was unaware of Roy and Sonny's plan to stage Sonny's death. Convinced Sonny was deceased, Luís targeted Jasper Jacks, repeatedly attempting to kill him and inflicting serious injuries. Sonny, however, intervened and shot Luís. Despite facing trial for the attempted murders of Sonny, Jax, and Zander Smith, and for Kristina Cassadine's murder, Luís's charges were dropped due to his influential connections.

Jason Morgan and Sonny conspired to permanently remove Luís. Inebriated at a Quartermaine Mansion party in Brenda's honor, Alcazar departed in his limousine, driven by Jason. Jason intended to assassinate Luís that evening, but Sonny called off the plan at the last minute due to A.J. Quartermaine's escalating suspicions. Despite facing numerous threats, including from Brenda, Luís's end came four months later when Alexis Davis, seeking vengeance for an explosion that killed her sister Kristina Cassadine, pushed him from a building. Although Jason and Brenda were innocent, they faced trial for his murder but were cleared when Skye Quartermaine remembered seeing Alexis in Luís's room. During her trial, Alexis claimed Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) and avoided the murder charges.

Following Luís' demise, his identical twin, Lorenzo Alcazar, emerged in 2003, bent on vengeance. The ex-History professor from Oxford University took over the Alcazar mob and its weapons trade. Lorenzo, a savvy international arms dealer, had ties to mob families and high-level government agencies, establishing him as a formidable figure in Port Charles. Prior to joining the family enterprise, he was an Oxford History lecturer. Lorenzo's path shifted when his wife, Sophie Germaine, was slain by insurgents in a village during his assistance to Luís after a failed transaction. Holding himself accountable for Sophie's death, he departed England to engage in the Alcazar operations. He later came to Port Charles seeking retribution for Luís' death. Upon learning Alexis was responsible for Luís' end, he forgave her, lacking mob connections, and instead fixated on Sonny, who had implicated his brother in Port Charles. Lorenzo persistently antagonized Sonny, vying for his domain and personally entangling with, then marrying, Sonny's spouse, Carly Corinthos.

Luís' daughter, Sage Alcazar, also entered the scene, intent on avenging her father shortly after his passing. Yet, Sage's quest for vengeance went unfulfilled, and she formed a romantic bond with Dillon Quartermaine. Tragically, in 2004, Sage's life was cut short by the unhinged Mary Bishop.

The conflict between Lorenzo and the Corinthos crime family escalated when Sonny and Jason intercepted shipments Alcazar was sending to his government contacts, aiming to free his imprisoned son Diego Alcazar, despite Lorenzo's entry into the criminal world solely to protect his son from the Ruiz mob. Despite his efforts, Diego was allegedly killed in 2006 by Sam McCall during a shootout involving Alcazar's men and Jason, who was fleeing with Sam after Ric Lansing and Lorenzo had Damien Spinelli frame her for a crime she didn't commit. Devastated by his son's death, Lorenzo vowed to shield his daughter with Skye, Lila Rae Alcazar, from a similar fate.

Resolving to exit the criminal life, Lorenzo's plans were thwarted by a gunshot to the head, resulting in temporary amnesia and erratic behavior, leading to conflicts with Sonny. Sonny, determined to end the threat, conspired with Skye—who desired Lorenzo's exit from her life—to eliminate him. Skye facilitated Jason's entry into their home, where he assassinated Alcazar. The aftermath lingered for months, with Jason standing trial for the murder but ultimately being exonerated with assistance from Jerry Jacks and Carly. The trial stirred rumors of Alcazar's survival; however, the "evidence" suggesting his existence was ultimately disclosed by Jerry to be falsified.

In 2008, it was discovered that Lorenzo's son Diego was alive and returned to Port Charles seeking vengeance on Jason, whom he blamed for his father's demise, as well as on everyone he held accountable for his family's downfall. He started terrorizing the town's women by sending them text messages before strangling them. Leticia Juarez, Michael's longtime nanny, was his first casualty, although Carly was the intended target. Diego's pattern of attacks earned him the moniker 'Text Message Killer.' In a vengeful spree, he murdered Jason's sister, Emily Quartermaine, during her engagement party to Nikolas Cassadine, and later Georgie Jones, which he regretted since he had meant to target her sister, Maxie Jones.

The Text Message Killer eventually exposed himself to Sam, then abducted her to the location where Jason had disposed of his father's body, planning to kill her. As the car teetered on a bridge, he fled, and Sam was rescued by Lucky Spencer just before the car plummeted. Diego retreated to the warehouse where Sam was thought to have previously killed him. Following a clash with Nikolas, who sought retribution for Emily's murder, Diego attempted escape but accidentally hanged himself from a catwalk. Subsequently, the Alcazar influence vanished from Port Charles. Various criminal factions competed for the coveted Alcazar waterfront piers controlled by Skye, the custodian of Alcazar's wealth and properties, but ultimately, she sold the piers to Ric Lansing before departing the town with her daughter.
