Bumpkin and Vivi (2003)

Fresh Off the Bumpkin was a special stand-alone episode of General Hospital which aired on December 31, 2003. This episode showcases a dream experienced by Dillon Quartermaine, presented in black and white to mimic the aesthetic of a traditional silent film, featuring music without any spoken dialogue. Several cast members portrayed different characters, reminiscent of the New Year's Eve episode from the previous year.

Storyline[]

As the Quartermaines continue to recuperate from the financial blow dealt by A.J. Quartermaine, who has left town with Lydia Karenin, they gather for a New Year's dinner. However, they soon discover that the Port Charles Grill will not deliver their meal on credit. Dillon and Coleman Ratcliffe arrive to convey this disappointing news, with Coleman suggesting that everyone join him at Jake's bar, a proposal the Quartermaines decline. As tensions escalate and disputes arise, Dillon falls asleep while watching an old film and misses a call from Georgie Jones, who invites him to Kelly's. While he sleeps, Dillon begins to dream that he is immersed in a silent movie.

In the dream, Dillon envisions himself as a rustic individual who has just arrived from the countryside featured in a film titled "Fresh Off the Bumpkin." which he directed himself. He has traveled to the city in pursuit of his beloved "Vivi" (Georgie) and to uncover the truth about his biological family, "the Sterlings". Meanwhile, his parents, (Cameron Lewis and Alexis Davis), realize their son is missing and set off for the city to bring him back. Concurrently, "Judge Sterling" (Edward Quartermaine) expresses his frustration towards his daughters, (Tracy Quartermaine, Monica Quartermaine, and Skye Chandler-Quartermaine), for their failure to provide him with an heir.

Later in another part of the city, two masked bandits are being pursued by three cops, (Scott Baldwin, Ric Lansing and Lucky Spencer). The thieves are dressed similarly to a loose woman (Faith Rosco), and her daughter (Sage Alcazar, who spot Bumpkin and recognize him as the rightful heir to the Sterling legacy. Sage, along with her mother and "Uncle Snidely" (Lorenzo Alcazar), devises a plan to arrange a marriage between herself and Bumpkin in order to gain access to the Sterling fortune. Upon their arrival in the city, Bumpkin's Mom and Pop are mistaken for the robbers and are chased by the cops, but they cleverly evade capture. Meanwhile, Judge Sterling discovers that one of his daughters has given birth to an illegitimate heir. When all his daughters claim to be the mother of the heir, he expels them into the snow. Just as Vivi finds Bumpkin, Sage throws herself into his arms, prompting Vivi to declare their relationship over and flee. With the assistance of her mother and Snidely, Sage manipulates Bumpkin into a wedding. When Snidely learns that Bumpkin still longs for Vivi, he reveals that Vivi has transformed into a promiscuous flapper. Bumpkin marries Sage but disappoints her by insisting they return to the farm with his parents. Sage becomes disillusioned with farm-life and returns to her mother. In an effort to keep Sage and Bumpkin together, Snidely finds Vivi and kidnaps her. Subsequently, Snidely contacts Bumpkin at the farm to inform him of Vivi's abduction.

Bumpkin hastily returns to the city to rescue Vivi, accompanied by his parents. Meanwhile, one of Sterling's daughters presents Judge Sterling with a photograph that implicates Bumpkin as her son. The police trace Bumpkin's parents to the Sterling mansion, and just as they are about to arrest them, the real bandits are caught in the act of attempting to rob the estate. Upon their capture, it is revealed that one of the Judge Sterling's daughters and a former gardener, whom he had dismissed for making inappropriate advances towards her, are the two culprits (Skye and Coleman). Judge Sterling suspects they must have continued their relationship in secret, while the daughter accuses her fatherโ€™s disowning of them as the reason for her betrayal. Although the police try to detain them, the criminals manage to escape. Bumpkin reunites with his true love, Vivi, just as Snidely releases a turnip truck that careens down the hill towards them. Fortunately, Bumpkin saves Vivi at the last moment. Together, Bumpkin and Vivi restrain the bandits, Sage, her mother, and Snidely just as the police arrive. Bumpkin learns that Snidely has been concealing a photograph that confirms Bumpkin as the rightful heir to the Sterling legacy. The Sterlings embrace him as part of the family. Bumpkin expresses his desire to marry Vivi, despite being married to Sage. Judge Sterling declares Bumpkin's marriage to Sage null and void. However, Bumpkin declines the offer to reside at the Sterling mansion and returns to the family farm, where he marries Vivi in the presence of his adoptive parents.

Upon waking, Dillon finds the message from Georgie and quickly makes his way to Kelly's. However, upon his arrival, he encounters only Sage, who unexpectedly kisses him at the stroke of midnight.
