Friendships and Rivalries have been a staple of soap operas since their inception. Many enemies have become "frenemies," entered into "situational friendships," or have developed full-blown friendships due to story-line progression. Secrets, lies, affairs, and miscommunications have led to lasting rivalries.

The Spencer vs. Cassadine feud that featured supercouple, Luke and Laura and began with The Ice Princess lasted for decades and spanned generations.
A frequent trope in Port Charles is the tension between parents and their long-lost children before their true familial ties are uncovered, often sparking conflict and emotional drama that deepens their eventual reconciliation. Examples include; Bobbie Spencer and Carly Spencer, Alexis Davis and Sam McCall, Sonny Corinthos and Dante Falconeri, Nina Reeves and Willow Tait, and Dante Falconeri and Gio Palmieri.
From the late 1990s to present day, the friendship and sometimes rivalry between Jason Morgan, Carly Spencer and Sonny Corinthos has been at the forefront of several storylines.
During the summer, General Hospital often highlights its "teen scene," showcasing groups of teens or young adults whose friendships and rivalries drive compelling storylines. These bonds, formed in youth, occasionally endure into adulthood, shaping lasting relationships.
In the early 1990s, A.J. Quartermaine, Brenda Barrett, Jagger Cates, Karen Wexler, Jason Quartermaine and Robin Scorpio headlined a popular young adult set. They were followed in the late 1990s by "The Four Musketeers" aka Lucky Spencer, Elizabeth Webber, Emily Quartermaine and Nikolas Cassadine.
Some friendships have even spanned generations. For example, the friendship between Sonny and Luke Spencer continued on in a closeness between Sonny and Luke's son, Lucky. The friendship between Anna Devane and Felicia Scorpio continued in the close bond between their daughters, Robin Scorpio-Drake and Maxie Jones, and the friendship between Sonny and Jason has continued in the friendship between Sonny's grandson, Rocco Falconeri and Jason's son, Danny Morgan.
