General Hospital: Night Shift stylized as NIGHTSHIFT, is an American prime time serial that first aired on Soapnet for a 27-episode run from July 12, 2007, to October 21, 2008. A spin-off of the ABC Daytime soap opera General Hospital, the show was SOAPnet's first original scripted drama series and follows the nighttime adventures of familiar and new characters around the hospital. The first season of the series was SOAPnet's most watched series ever.
Background[]
The first season of Night Shift was broadcast from July 12, 2007, to October 4, 2007, and it was succeeded by a second season that ran from July 22, 2008, to October 21, 2008. Prior to its debut, SOAPnet revealed that Night Shift would delve into the intricate dynamics of relationships, friendships, and medical scenarios within the hospital. The series was crafted with standalone storylines, wrapping up within each hour-long episode, thus appealing to viewers not familiar with General Hospital. With the intent to attract a younger demographic to SOAPnet and General Hospital, Night Shift incorporated characters from the history of General Hospital, focusing mainly on the younger members tied to the central families. After the first season ended on October 4, 2007, the narrative threads from Night Shift were woven into General Hospital starting on October 5, 2007.
During the first season, Robert Guza Jr. held the position of head writer, while Jill Farren Phelps was the Executive Producer. In May 2008, Lisa de Cazotte was announced to take over as Executive Producer for the second season, with Sri Rao stepping in as Head Writer. The second season of Night Shift, recorded in high-definition, started airing on Tuesdays at 11 p.m., with its premiere on July 22, 2008. According to SOAPnet, the new season "will feature both new and returning characters, as well as the return of 'legacy' characters from GH, ensuring continuity between storylines on Night Shift and GH." The season concluded on October 21, 2008.
