Jennifer Elizabeth Francesca Smith is a fictional character on the ABC soap opera General Hospital. She is the daughter of the late notorious mobster, Frank Smith, and known for her broken engagement with Luke Spencer.

Lisa Marie portrayed the character in 1979 and 1980, Roseanne Arnold in 1994, and Sally Struthers in February 2002. The character returned in 2015 and then in 2022 played by Holly Gagnier.

Casting

The role of Jennifer Smith was originated by actress and model Lisa Marie, in December 1979. Shortly after, the character was written out of the show.

In 1994, Jennifer returned to the canvas, portrayed by comedienne and Roseanne star Roseanne Arnold. Arnold, who is a fan of the series, appeared with her then-husband Tom Arnold, for three episodes from March 22-24, 1994. In return, Anthony Geary and Genie Francis, who portray Luke Spencer and Laura Webber, appeared in an episode of Arnold's sitcom, Roseanne.

The role was played by All in the Family actress Sally Struthers for 10 episodes from February 13-25, 2002. Struthers said of Jennifer's return, "Needless to say, Jennifer has a few issues with Luke and Laura. She has some unfinished business."

The character returned from June 22-24, 2015 and then again on January 21 and 24, 2022 portrayed by Holly Gagnier. Gagnier has wrapped up her latest appearance.

Gagnier returned as Jennifer from April 6 to April 8, 2022.

Storylines

In December 1979, Frank Smith introduced his daughter Jennifer to Luke Spencer at a New Years party. Jennifer Smith was in love with Luke Spencer. Luke was only involved with Jennifer to gain control of her father's, Frank Smith non mob-related businesses. Laura Webber was jealous of their relationship. Luke and Jennifer decided to get married. Their wedding was going to be held on a yacht. Scott Baldwin discovered that Luke had raped Laura. He found his way on to the yacht and attacked Luke. Luke fell overboard and was presumed dead. He was not. He swam to a dock where Laura was waiting for him. They ran off together. After Frank was put in jail, Jennifer disappeared. She was later said to be in Europe.

In 1994, Luke and Laura ran into Jennifer and her husband, Billy "Baggs" Boggs in Atlantic City. It was clear that Jennifer had never gotten over Luke because she kept flirting with him. Billy was also attracted to Laura. Luke and Laura got away when they threatened to expose theft charges against Jennifer and Billy. If they were exposed, Jennifer would go to prison.

In 2002, Jennifer kidnapped Luke and Laura at The Triple Six Ranch near Mexico. She revealed that she had divorced Billy and wanted Luke to marry her. She said if he didn't, she would kill Laura. She wanted Laura's death to be a wedding present to her. Roy DiLucca posed as the reverend for the ceremony and Felicia Jones posed as his wife. Laura pretended to knock out Luke during the vows. Roy and Felicia helped Luke and Laura escape without harm. Jennifer escaped across the border to Mexico with her henchmen.

In 2015, it was revealed that Jennifer kidnapped Lucky so she could sleep with Luke, but that was later revealed to be untrue and she doesn't have Lucky. She just wanted Luke so she lied.

In January 2022, Jennifer returned to Port Charles after Luke's memorial ended on The Haunted Star. It was revealed that she was also a grieving widow as she had briefly married Luke before the marriage was annulled. Laura points out that Jennifer owned property in the Northwest and that someone took over for Cyrus Renault over there. Jennifer claims that was her father's business. She leaves and gets in a car where she talks to Cyrus' West Coast replacement on the phone who she is working for.

In April 2022, Jennifer is in French Polynesia talking again on the phone to the West Coast mobster in an affectionate way. She tells him she is there for the Ice Princess auction. Valentin comes by in a disguise and flirts with Jennifer. She takes him back to her place where he opens her safe while she takes a shower. The W.S.B. knock at the door and Valentin slips away as Jennifer answers and they come in. The safe is searched and the Ice Princess (planted by Valentin) is found inside. Jennifer is arrested as the W.S.B. was given intel that she was connected to Kurt Markovic, the cable car operator who killed Luke. An agent Beeman suspects that Jennifer stole the diamond and killed Luke herself. She claims she is innocent.

On May 16, Beeman calls Anna and tells her there is evidence against Jennifer and she will spend the rest of her life in Steinmauer Prison.
