Ward family[]
Mary Mae Ward, the family matriarch, earned her living as a blues singer in Virginia. During one performance, she encountered a navy man named Edward Quartermaine. Their mutual understanding and shared love for music brought them closer. They engaged in a brief affair before Edward was deployed overseas, yet they remained connected through letters. Mary Mae informed Edward in a letter that she was expecting his child and intended to raise the child alone, whom she named Bradley.
In 1946, Mary Mae married Dan Ward and moved the family to Port Charles. Together, they had another son, David Ward, and a daughter named Idios. Bradley grew up unaware that Edward was his biological father, believing he was the son of a soldier who had died in war. Dan passed away from a stroke in 1969. Bradley married Isobel, and they had three children: Faith Ward, Justus Ward, and a third daughter whose name was not disclosed. Additionally, it was uncovered that Bradley had an affair with Kylie Quinlan, a judge's daughter. Kylie became pregnant with Bradley's child but lost the baby after a car accident.
Mary Mae did not encounter Edward again until 1974, when she visited his apartment to warn him that their son was in peril. One of Edward's associates had dealings with the mob boss Frank Smith, and their son Bradley had been causing the criminals problems. Edward endeavored to protect him, but tragically, Bradley was killed that night in what appeared to be a suicide. Mary Mae buried Bradley's body in her front yard, which eventually became the property of the Spencer family.
Mary Mae made her on-screen debut in 1994. She quickly formed a bond with Laura Spencer, who helped her run the Bradley Ward house orphanage, named in his memory. When Laura purchased Mary Mae's former residence, she unearthed Bradley's remains in the garden. Edward, having previously used his wealth and influence to halt the investigation into Bradley's death, was apprehended and charged with the murder. This led to Justus arriving in Port Charles from Philadelphia for his father's memorial, accompanied by his cousin Keesha Ward.
In a dramatic turn of events, as Edward faced imprisonment for a murder he did not commit, Mary Mae testified in court. She disclosed that Edward was Bradley's father, making it impossible for him to have committed the crime. Justus initially struggled with the revelation of his connection to the Quartermaines but gradually accepted them. The Quartermaines embraced the Wards as family, and with the support of his grandfather and Sonny Corinthos, Justus became the district attorney of Port Charles.
In 1996, Mary Mae passed away in her sleep, coinciding with the death of the actress who portrayed her. The Wards, Quartermaines, and over half of Port Charles attended her funeral. Subsequently, Keesha and Justus left town a few years later, in 1998.
Justus returned to Port Charles in 2003, assuming the role of attorney for Sonny Corinthos and Jason Morgan, to the chagrin of his grandfather Edward. He stayed in town until 2006 when he was killed by Manny Ruiz, having stumbled upon a mob setup meant for Jason. Edward was particularly devastated by Justus's death.
In early 2010, Faith's daughter, Maya Ward, reached out to her great-grandfather Edward, seeking a place to complete her medical internship. Edward was thrilled to invite her to Port Charles to intern at General Hospital. A few months after relocating from Philadelphia, Maya found herself married to Ethan Lovett following a drunken mishap in Las Vegas. Over time, Maya and Ethan developed feelings for each other. However, when Maya went back to her hometown to care for her ailing aunt, their contact diminished. Ethan, hoping to surprise Maya, was stunned to discover her with another man. She confessed to Ethan that she had fallen in love with someone else and had been deceiving him for some time, with no intention of returning to Port Charles. Subsequently, Ethan and Maya acknowledged the end of their marriage and separated on good terms.
