Rio Mangini as Oscar Nero

Oscar Nero was a fictional character on the ABC daytime soap opera General Hospital. He was the son of former Navy SEAL, Chief Drew Cain and his former lover, Dr. Kim Nero.

Casting

The role was originated by Rio Mangini, who portrayed Oscar for two episodes on June 23 and 26, 2017.[5]

Due to Mangini joining the cast of the Netflix comedy Everything Sucks, the role was recast with Andi Mack actor Garren Stitt, who debuted a week later on July 7.[6][7][8]

Garren Stitt was announced departing from General Hospital in May 2019.

Background

Krew1

Oscars with his parents

He was conceived during a brief relationship his parents had in San Diego while his father was in the Navy.

Kim found out she was pregnant shortly after Drew was deployed and didn't think he would've welcomed a child with a woman he barely knew, so she decided not to tell him, although she did try to contact the Navy. However, her attempts to contact the Navy were initially unsuccessful, due to the fact that she was not a family member.

A couple of years later, when Kim did manage to get in contact with the Navy, she learned of Drew's "desertion." In reality, Drew had actually been kidnapped in an elaborate plot spearheaded by Cesar Faison and involving many of Port Charles' most notorious villains.

He is close with his father's family, the Quartermaine and has begun to get close with his uncle Jason. He trusts Jason with matters of his will if he dies.

In December 2018, it was revealed that Oscar was conceived on New Years Eve 2001 and was born in October 2002.

On April 29, 2019 (shown on May 1, 2019), Oscar died in his sleep.

On May 10, 2019, Oscar is cremated and on May 13, his ashes were poured over his own meadow - "Oscar's Meadow".

Oscar and his girlfriend, Josslyn Jacks

Oscar was first seen at Josslyn's house for a party. Oscar and Josslyn shared their first kiss on September 14, 2017. After learning that his mother Kim knew Drew Cain in the early 2000s, they both began to suspect that Drew might be Oscar's father.

Joss swiped a coffee mug from Drew's penthouse (one he recently drank out of) after she and Oscar paid Drew and Sam a visit under false pretences. She then used the mug to run a DNA test. They got results but Oscar didn't want to know. Later on, Kim told Drew that Oscar is his son. Oscar and Drew have since hung out a couple of times and have decided to get to know each other.

Oscar eventually changed his mind and wanted to know. The test confirmed that Drew is indeed his father. After finding out, Drew went to see Oscar but it didn't go well. A few days later, Oscar went to see Drew at Aurora and they tried to get to know each other. On Christmas, Oscar decided to spend it with his new family the Quartermaine's. While there he meets his little sister, Scout.

On the 4th of July, Oscar spends the holiday in the park with Josslyn to watch the fireworks. They are joined briefly by Cameron Spencer and Oscar becomes slightly uncomfortable when he learns of Josslyn and Cameron's past closeness.

On September 5, 2018, it's revealed that Oscar has an inoperable brain tumor and may only have months to live. His mother has been searching for treatments for two years but there’s nothing anyone can do.

On September 24, Oscar found out about his cancer from Cameron and then it was confirmed by his parents. He felt betrayed by his parents as they didn't tell him and made him think he has years to live.

On October 17, Josslyn stated that it's Oscar's birthday.

At the beginning of 2019, Terry Randolph tells Oscar, Josslyn, and his parents that the treatment for his brain tumor did not work and that he will die in a matter of seven to eight months, but it might also go as early as six weeks. Oscar decides that he wants to live the rest of his life having fun. He tells Joss that he has not seen a lot of Port Charles and that he wants to see The Catacombs. They get as far as getting to a cellar that is above them and he has another seizure. He is saved by Drew and Jason after Sam finds them trapped and is taken to the hospital for further observation.

In March, Oscar, Josslyn, Trina, and Cameron decide to travel to Niagara Falls because the latter is too distressed about his mother marrying a potential serial killer. Once at the motel, Oscar professes his love for Josslyn, but had another seizure and was thus hospitalized yet again. In March 19, it was revealed that Oscar's tumor is regrowing and he has less than a month.

On April 4, 2019, Oscar was with his girlfriend Josslyn talking about their future together when all of sudden Oscar has a severe seizure that caused him to fall on the bridge Josslyn witness the whole thing and freaks out but Oscar is saved and rushed to General Hospital when his parents Drew and Kim gets bad news he is in a coma as result of the severe seizure and his brain tumor regrowing progressive. Terry tells Drew and Kim that if Oscar wakes up he won't be the same. Oscar eventually does wake up, but he is very weak. His right side of his body was greatly impacted due to the seizure. The doctor says he only has days left. Monica suggests that he and his family should spend their last days together as a family and that they move into the Quartermaine mansion.

On April 29, 2019 (shown on May 1, 2019), Oscar died in his sleep and was escorted into heaven by his great-grandparents, Edward and Lila Quartermaine

On May 10-13, Oscar was cremated and his ashes were poured over a meadow in his name ("Oscar's Meadow") by all of his loved ones.
