Samantha "Sam" McCall[27] was a fictional character on the ABC soap opera, General Hospital. She was the daughter of the late mob boss, Julian Jerome and his ex-wife, attorney, Alexis Davis via one night stand; and the illegal adoptive daughter of the late Cody McCall and his late ex-wife, Evelyn McCall.
She was portrayed by Kelly Monaco from October 1, 2003, to November 1, 2024, with a flashback appearance on December 9, 2024.
During Monacoโs temporary leaves, Lindsay Hartley, known from Passions, stepped in as Sam on: August 4-13, 2020; February 3-7, 2022; January 2, 2024; August 22-23, 2024; and September 16-18, 2024.[28][29]
She is best known for her relationships with Jason Morgan and Det. Dante Falconeri.

The role of Sam was originated by former Baywatch star and Playboy's April 1997 Playmate of the Month, actress, Kelly Monaco on October 1, 2003.
Monaco, who had previously portrayed Livvie Locke on the ABC Daytime soap opera Port Charles (GH's spinoff) from 1999-2003, was one of several performers from the cancelled soap to join the cast of a main daytime show. She was also Livvie's double Tess Ramsey from 2002-03.
Monaco had also auditioned for ABC Daytime's All My Children as well as CBS Daytime's As the World Turns, both of which were based in New York at the time, and Monaco's eagerness to stay on the West coast led to her ultimately signing with General Hospital, based in Los Angeles.
While portraying Sam, Monaco played Alicia Montenegro, Sam's European look-alike in 2005.
In 2005, Monaco joined the first season of ABC's Dancing with the Stars and was the first champion, along with her partner, Alec Mazo, of what turned into a multi-season competition.
In 2012, Monaco returned for Season 15 of the show known as the All Stars season and placed third with her partner, Val Chmerkovskiy.
In August 2009, a casting call was sent out to recast the role of Sam, leaving fans shocked by her possible departure. Despite rumors and speculation, Monaco's co-stars Steve Burton (Jason Morgan) and Nancy Lee Grahn (Alexis Davis) denied she was departing from the show. Monaco herself dispelled the rumors, stating there was "really no doubt" she would renew her contract; it was merely standard procedure for ABC to release the casting call since she and the network had not signed off on a new contract by a set deadline.
In 2006, Monaco was nominated for a Daytime Emmy in the category of Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for her role.
On July 30, 2020, Daytime Confidential revealed that Passions vet Lindsay Hartley would step in as a temporary recast of Sam when new episodes return in August. Hartley is only supposed to fill in for Monaco for a couple weeks.[30][31][32] Hartley appeared as Sam from August 4 to August 13, 2020.
On August 14, 2020, Hartley announced she was done taping as Sam.[33] On the same day, Monaco confirmed that she is filming again.[34] Monaco returned as Sam on August 18, 2020.
On February 2, 2022, it was revealed that Hartley will once again step in as a temporary recast of Sam and fill in for Monaco.[35] Hartley returned as Sam from February 3 to February 7, 2022.

On January 2, 2024, Hartley returned again to temporarily fill in for Monaco. She returned as a fill-in for Monaco again from August 22-23, 2024, and September 16-18, 2024.
On August 26, 2024, it was revealed that Monaco has been let go from GH after 21 years.[36] Rumors also suggested that her character will be killed off this fall and her exit is storyline-dictated. The news of Monaco's firing has led to major backlash from the fans, urging GH to re-think their decision.[37]
On September 23, 2024, it was revealed that Monaco will return to GH as Sam this week after Hartley had filled in for her again last week.[38] It's not a permanent return as Monaco is still set to exit the series this fall. She returned on September 25, 2024.
On September 27, 2024, Monaco's mother confirmed on Instagram that she had filmed her final scenes that same day.[39] Monaco made her final appearance on November 1, 2024 after her character was killed off.

Soaps In Depth named the character on their list of the 50 naughtiest soap opera vixens in 2009.[41] When Sam first arrives in Port Charles, sheโs depicted as a cunning con artist and rebellious "bad girl," skilled at manipulating situations to her advantage. Her tough exterior and scheming ways stem from a challenging upbringing, being raised on the road by her con artist father, Cody McCall, who taught her the art of the con. As it was all she knew, a young Sam used cons to support her mentally handicapped older brother, Danny McCall, revealing the complex motivations behind her gritty persona. [42]
Sam grows close to mobster, Jason Morgan, during her pregnancy with the child of Sonny Corinthos. Co-star Burton (Jason) later explained: "It's been a long journey for Jason and Sam. When they first got together, it wasn't really supposed to be that they got together. He was kind of helping her out with her pregnancy. After that whole time they fell in love."[43]
When the couple broke up in 2008, Monaco said to Soap Opera Digest,
- "I feel Sam and Jason was so abruptly ended without any explanation, really, as to the coldness that was so one-sided [on Jason's part]. Of course, Jake came into play, but I felt like Jason and Sam were always strong enough to overcome."[44]
Sam begins a relationship with Lucky Spencer to get back at Elizabeth. Monaco describes the progression of the relationship to Soap Opera Digest, "In the beginning it was very calculated and manipulative. Eventually, it turned genuine. At age 16, Alexis Davis was sent by her father, Mikkos Cassadine, to Briarton Griggs Academy, an all-girls boarding school in New Hampshire.
Seeking to reinvent herself, Alexis snuck out, visited a bar, and had a one-night stand with Julian Jerome, whose identity she wouldnโt recall until 2013.
Pregnant from the encounter, she never informed Julian and didnโt see him again for 31 years. Mikkos sent her to a Maine clinic to give birth, then forced her to give up the child, forging documents to make Alexis believe her daughter had died to prevent her from later searching.
The child, Sam, was illegally adopted by Cody McCall and Evelyn Bass, who chose adoption fearing another child with disabilities like their son, Danny McCall.
When Sam was three, Evelyn, fed up with Codyโs con artist lifestyle, left with Danny, abandoning Sam. Raised by Cody, Sam learned to salvage and run cons.
As a teenager, she sought out Evelyn in Baileyโs Beach, South Carolina, to confront her, only to find Danny chained in the basement.
Sam freed him, but during their escape, Danny accidentally knocked over a candle, igniting a fire that killed Evelyn, who they didn't know was inside. Arrested for arson, Sam was bailed out and fled with Danny to avoid a murder conviction.
A young Sam does her best to care for Danny, but eventually resorts to extreme measures to pay his bills.
To support him, she used Codyโs teachings to marry and scam five wealthy men under aliases. The invalid marriages were all extremely brief, lasting only long enough for her to get access to their bank accounts and disappear:

- "Angela Monroe" married Bill Monroe, her final mark. In July 1998, Bill was killed in self-defense by Sam after he discovered her intentions and physically attacked her.

In 2006, Alexis was revealed as Samโs biological mother, making Kristina Corinthos-Davis and Molly Lansing-Davis her half-sisters.
Initially, Sam and Alexis clashed, but they later, over the years, developed a close mother-daughter bond and even became best friends.

Searching for Dead Man's Hand
In 2003, 23-year-old Sam McCall arrived in Port Charles and partnered with Jasper "Jax" Jacks to locate the five lucky cards of the Dead Man's Hand, believed to hold the key to saving Jax's father, John Jacks and reversing the McCall family's "bad luck." When Jax's father died, tensions arose as Sam continued her pursuit of the cards, even sabotaging Jax's car, which prevented him from reaching his father's deathbed. Overwhelmed by guilt, Sam still developed a romantic relationship with Jax, but he ended it upon discovering her betrayal. Sam then began an affair with the much-older, Sonny Corinthos, a married man with two children. Despite her reservations, she fell for him. During the Port Charles Hotel Fire, Sam, believing Sonny had perished and they were soon to follow, slept with Jax while they were trapped. After their rescue, she learned Sonny was alive and resumed their affair. However, Sonny chose to return to his wife, Carly, when their son, Michael, was hospitalized.
Sam finds out she's pregnant
Soon after, Sam discovered she was pregnant and considered an abortion but decided against it. Jason Morgan, Sonny's loyal friend, encouraged her to inform Sonny about the pregnancy. Determined to protect Sonny's family, Sam fled to South America, planning to give her baby up for adoption. Both Sonny and Jax tracked her down, each believing he was the father, and insisted on a paternity test. Fleeing their pressure, Sam fell down a staircase. Jason supported her during recovery, convincing her to return and stay with him. A paternity test revealed neither Sonny nor Jax was the father, but Jason and Sonny admitted Jason had tampered with the results to protect Sonny's marriage, confirming Sonny as the father. To preserve Sonny and Carly's relationship, Sam agreed to claim Jason as the father. Living with Jason, Sam formed a close friendship with him. They nearly married for the child's sake, but Sam, unwilling to commit without love, left town again. Jason found her and brought her back. Soon after, both Sonny and Jason were targeted by Nico Dane, Sam's abusive ex-boyfriend, escalating the danger around them.

Jason discovers Faith Rosco, working for A.J. Quartermaine, is responsible. After rescuing the boys, Jason and Sam help Michael cope with the trauma of the kidnapping and witnessing A.J.โs murder.
Michael begins therapy with Dr. Asher Thomas, but Jason grows suspicious. Together, Jason and Sam uncover that Dr. Thomas is A.J.โs killer. During his escape attempt, Dr. Thomas injures Sam, but Jason tracks him down and kills him. On a private getaway, Jason and Sam are taken hostage by socialite Allegra Montenegro. She forces Sam to impersonate her daughter, Alicia, and marry businessman Andrew Olsen to secure the Montenegro familyโs wealth. Sam complies only after Allegra threatens Jasonโs life. When Andrew is found dead, Sam is arrested for murder. With Jason and Allegraโs help, Sam escapes, and the real Alicia is arrested. Jason and Sam return to Port Charles, their bond strengthened by the ordeal.
Sam and Jason decide to start a family
When Jason loses his memory, and Sam stands by him, reigniting their love. Sam persuades Jason to try a controversial treatment from his ex-girlfriend, Dr. Robin Scorpio. Before starting, Jason proposes to Sam again. The treatment restores his memory but ultimately fails, leading him to reluctantly agree to risky surgery. During a February 2006 encephalitis outbreak, Alexis receives an antidote instead of Samโs brother, Danny, who dies. Furious, Sam blames Alexis. Before his death, Danny hints that Sam was โchosenโ by their parents, raising suspicions of adoption. A DNA test confirms Danny wasnโt her biological brother, and Sam and Jason uncover records showing Alexis, aged 16, gave birth to Sam on May 11, 1980. Due to their strained relationship, they keep this secret from Alexis.

In May 2006, Jasonโs mob enemy, Manny Ruiz, shoots Sam while sheโs in Jasonโs arms. Surgery fails to help her recover due to blood clotting issues. Desperate, Jason reveals to Alexis that she is Samโs mother. Alexis stays by Samโs bedside, but tensions rise when doctors Patrick and Noah Drake disagree on treatment. Jason opts for Patrickโs surgery, performed by Patrick, Elizabeth Spencer, and Epiphany Johnson, leading Alexis to have them arrested. Alexis also convinces Jason to end things with Sam for her safety. After recovering, Sam moves in with Alexis and her family, earns her GED, and takes a job at the Port Charles Police Department as a file clerk.

Still in love with Jason, she pursues him, straining their relationship further. Frustrated by Jason continuing to push her away, Sam argues with Alexis, who calls her pathetic. Ric defends Sam, and after Alexis storms off, Sam and Ric get drunk and sleep together, witnessed by both Alexis and Jason. Devastated, Jason has a one-night stand with Elizabeth, who later becomes pregnant. Learning of Jasonโs actions and hurt by her own, Sam plans to leave town but stays when Alexis reveals her cancer diagnosis. Sam supports her sisters during Alexisโ treatment, though her constant arguments with Ric and Alexisโ distance complicate things. Alexis later admits she knows about Sam and Ricโs night together. Despite her efforts, Samโs relationship with Alexis remains tense. Ric frames Sam, leading to her arrest, but sheโs exonerated. By Christmas, Sam and Jason reconcile and move back in together.

In early 2007, Sam is among the Metro Court hostages and bravely confronts Mr. Craig. Amelia Joffe offers her a TV hosting job on Everyday Heroes, secretly seeking revenge because Sam killed her father, Bill Monroe, in self-defense. Tensions strain Sam and Jasonโs relationship due to his ongoing friendship with Elizabeth. After surviving the hostage crisis, Sam is heartbroken to learn she cannot have children due to extensive uterine damage from the gunshot wound she suffered in Jasonโs arms in 2006. The news shatters her and Jasonโs hopes of starting a family together, leaving Sam to grapple with profound grief and the loss of their shared dream. In May 2007, Sam learns Jason is the father of Elizabethโs son, Jake. She tries to get Jason to admit the truth, simply wanting him to be honest so they could work through things, but he stays silent. When Jason is jailed for Lorenzo Alcazarโs murder, Jake is kidnapped. Sam witnesses the kidnapping but, overwhelmed by Jasonโs secrecy and her own pain, freezes and doesnโt act. Amelia later reveals to Sam that Jason knows she saw the kidnapping. Confronted, Sam admits she was paralyzed by hurt and betrayal, delusionally believing Maureen, a grieving mother, could give Jake a better home, reflecting her fragile mental state.
Guilt and intoxication consume Sam in the aftermath, leading to the collapse of her relationship with Jason, fulfilling Ameliaโs vendetta. In jail, Sam confronts Jason about the kidnapping and his lies, then ends their relationship. The breakup sends Sam into a downward spiral, embracing her more Cassadine side. In a vengeful act, she hires crewmen from her TV show to scare Elizabeth and her sons in a park, posing them as Jasonโs enemies to frame herself as a hero and atone for her inaction during Jakeโs kidnapping. Jason, furious upon learning this, threatens her life. Undeterred, Sam fakes distress to lure Jason, taunting him about her plan to seduce Lucky Spencer, Elizabethโs husband. Sam hires Lucky as her bodyguard to seduce him as revenge against Jason and Elizabeth. Though Lucky recognizes her motives, he succumbs, and their affair begins.[45]

After Lucky and Elizabeth divorce, Sam and Lucky develop genuine feelings, but Elizabeth exposes Samโs role in Jakeโs kidnapping and the park incident. Furious, Lucky confronts Sam and kicks her out. At the docks, Sam is attacked by the Text Message Killer (TMK). Fleeing, sheโs hit by a car and hospitalized with a broken hip and other injuries. Lucky feels guilty for ignoring her distress call during the attack. Elizabeth and Jason visit, suspecting Elizabeth may have been the driver, but Monica Quartermaine, driving drunk, is revealed as responsible. After her release, Sam is attacked again at home by the TMK, revealed as Diego Alcazar, whom Sam shot in 2006 and was presumed dead. Diego kidnaps Sam and Elizabeth, attempting to kill them by driving a car off a bridge.

In April 2008, when Michael Corinthos is shot, Sam visits Carly and Michael in the hospital, expressing her condolences to Jason and apologizing to Elizabeth for her past actions against her and Jake. Elizabeth accepts the apology, fostering a friendlier dynamic between them. Sam begins working undercover to investigate mobster Andrei Karpov and later Jerry Jacks, straining her relationship with Lucky. In November 2008, Jerry kidnaps Sam, planning to blow her up on a boat with stolen drugs to fake his death, but Jason rescues her. After Karpovโs death, a mob war erupts, prompting Sam and Elizabeth, along with Jake and Cameron, to seek safety in a remote cabin. Russian mobsters follow them, leading to a shootout.
Sam promises to defend Elizabeth and her children with her life. During the shootout, Sam sends Elizabeth to protect the children and confronts the attackers, but her gun runs out of bullets. Elizabeth intervenes, saving Sam from being shot by a Russian. In the chaos, they discover Jake has been kidnapped. Sam and Jason pursue the kidnappers, while Lucky arrives to take Elizabeth and Cameron home. Jason and Sam rescue Jake, and Jason forgives Sam for her past actions, acknowledging her bravery in protecting Jake. Sam then tracks Sasha Donev, Karpovโs lawyer and Jakeโs kidnapper, but gets caught and falls into an old well. Jason rescues her, and sheโs hospitalized. When Sam shares her desire to become a private investigator, Lucky disapproves, further straining their relationship.

In January 2009, a distressed Damian Spinelli visits Sam after FBI agent Winifred Leeds hacks him, tracking his movements for the Feds. Spinelli is arrested, but Jason secures his release by striking a deal with the FBI. When the Feds betray Jason, forcing him to turn on Sonny, Sam breaks into the FBI evidence room and destroys the evidence, saving both Jason and Spinelli. Grateful, Jason helps Sam and Spinelli establish a private investigation firm through his accountant, Bernie Abrahms, a former P.I. In February 2009, during a hospital crisis, Sam and Lucky amicably end their relationship, choosing to remain friends. As they prepare to bring Nikolas back to clear Jasonโs name, Laura, Kevin Collins, Dante, and Lulu Falconeri arrive, also seeking Nikolas. Valentin Cassadine, disguised as Theo, takes the group hostage to force Nikolas to sign over the Cassadine heritage. He isolates "Jason" and Sam, using Sam to control "Jason". Sam, suffering from fatigue and fainting, collapses, prompting "Jason" to break free from his restraints and overpower their guard. They build a fire to signal the coast guard and are rescued. Back in Port Charles, the charges against "Jason" are dropped, and he and Sam reunite with Danny. On July 17, Sam confronts Sonny at Black Duck Distillery, holding him at gunpoint. Despite Sonnyโs attempts to calm her, she shoots him in the leg and pushes him into a dumpster. At General Hospital, Sam is diagnosed with toxoplasmosis, contracted from the bridge incident. Fortunately, Scout is unaffected. Sonny, rescued by Carly, forgives Sam after learning of her condition. After Shiloh prioritizes Kristina over Daisy Kwan, a DOD member, Daisy apologizes to Sam for past blackmail. Sam notices a distinctive tattoo on Daisyโs lower back, which Daisy dismisses as a youthful mistake before leaving abruptly. Sam sketches the tattoo and sends it to Spinelli, who finds no leads. Later, itโs revealed Willow Tait and Harmony Miller have identical tattoos. Jason and Sam intervene during Kristinaโs โTrustโ ceremony, stopping it before Harmony and Daisy, who drugged her, can tattoo her or Shiloh can assault her. They take Kristina to a safe house to distance her from Shiloh. Kristina reveals she gave Shiloh a pledge that could incriminate someone she loves, initially assumed to be Sonny but later revealed to be about Alexis. Shiloh takes her hostage, trapping her in a freezer with limited air to blackmail Jason into undergoing a memory-transfer procedure with Drewโs memories. On January 2, 2020, Samโs parole officer, Dolores Maloney, visits and informs her that firearms and alcohol are prohibited in her home. They share three happy years raising Danny, Scout, and Rocco together. In early 2024, itโs revealed Jason survived the Cassadine Island tunnel collapse. His return strains his relationship with Sam, who accuses him of being an absent father, leaving her to raise Danny alone. Their arguments escalate over Jasonโs time with Danny, with Sam frustrated by his undisclosed whereabouts during his absence. Jason counters that Samโs strict approach pushes Danny toward secrecy. With Spinelliโs help, Sam uncovers that Jason stayed away because the FBI held evidence of Carlyโs R.I.C.O. violations, explaining his absence but not fully resolving their tensions.
The revelation that Jason stayed away due to the FBIโs evidence against Carly for R.I.C.O. violations fuels Samโs anger, as she feels he prioritized Carly over Danny and Scout. However, after Jasonโs trip to Africa to rescue Lucky Spencer for Lulu Spencerโs liver transplant, Samโs perspective shifts. At General Hospital, she apologizes to Jason, recognizing his risk-taking nature as integral to his identity and encouraging him to stay true to himself. Jason apologizes for not informing her about the Africa trip. Their reconciliation begins, and Sam confides in Dante about a potential turning point with Jason. On October 16, 2024, Sam learns sheโs a match to donate part of her liver to Lulu. After consulting Dr. Terry Randolph and undergoing further tests, she agrees to the procedure.
She informs Dante, whoโs overjoyed, and they share the news with Danny, Rocco, and Scout. Scout expresses concern, but they reassure her that Sam will recover and her liver will regenerate. Scout suggests a post-surgery celebration party. Sam informs Alexis, Kristina, Molly, Jason, and Drew, who agree to support the kids during her recovery. Jason and Drew express pride in her decision. On the day of the surgery, Sam is visited at General Hospital by Felicia, Maxie, Spinelli, Alexis, Danny, Scout, Dante, Rocco, Sonny, and Carly, who all express gratitude and well wishes. Jason instructs the children to wait at Bobbie's and approaches Alexis, who is equally concerned and confused. They wait anxiously for thirty agonizing minutes until Portia, Lucas, and Elizabeth emerge, somberly informing them that Sam has passed away due to cardiac arrest. The news devastates Alexis and Jason; Jason is paralyzed by shock, while Alexis, in denial, rushes to see Sam.
