A supercouple is a popular, dynamic pairing that intrigues and fascinates the public. The term is usually used in fiction works, such as television shows and works of literature, but can also be used when referring to celebrities. While usually a successful model, it has been criticized for hindering the possibilities of other love interests.
Luke and Laura are one of the most well-known couples in soap opera history. Though other "supercouples" came before them, Luke and Laura are the most well known outside of the soap opera realm, and are credited with defining the term "supercouple," which caused other soap operas to copy the successful formula.
The supercouple formula can consist of action stories, romance, and obstacles for the couple to overcome. Many supercouples of the "golden age" such as Luke and Laura, Robert and Holly, Duke and Anna and Frisco and Felicia followed this model.
True supercouples have the ability to overcome numerous obstacles or significant strife and turmoil in order to be together. The pairings tend to triumph over internal and external factors designed to keep them apart and can endure through almost unimaginable circumstances or events.
Examples include: Luke raped Laura, Alan and Monica tried to kill one another and controversially had an instance of marital rape, Jason threatened Sam's life, Sonny threatened Carly's life and was at times physically and emotionally abusive to Brenda (i.e. the "infamous wire scene").
Many of these actions are considered "toxic" and critics suggest they likely would not be accepted by modern audiences, but large and wide-spread support for these pairings still remain, showing the dysfunction and tumultuous nature or "dark side" of some of the more intense supercouple pairs.
Over the years, the couples listed below have been named popular supercouples by both ABC and General Hospital fans.
In 2018, General Hospital released special collections for supercouples, Jason and Sam and Sonny and Carly. The collections, appearing on the show's website, highlighted unforgettable moments in both couple's love stories.
In 2020, when production was shut down due to the Covid-19 pandemic, GH dedicated three weeks in June to showcase fan favorite supercouples. With each couple having its own dedicated week, Luke and Laura, Jason and Sam, and Sonny and Carly were featured.
